FLYNN LIVES!! "Tron Legacy" Trailer Debuts
Tuesday, Mar 9 | Joseph Savitski
It's been far over a decade, but the wait is over. This December, Walt Disney Pictures will debut "Tron Legacy" in IMAX and 3D at movie theater across the globe. Not bad, since the original barely dented the box office with only a $33 million take.
A weeks before the first theatrical trailer was to debut before "Alice", a viral marketing campaign was being waged online. A binary clock counted down, while by scrolling down lower and clicking on "Flynn Lives", the site briefly catched the viewer up with the events in the "Tron" universe. Apparently, renegade programmer Kevin Flynn has vanished--presumambly into cyberspace. The evil corporation he used to work for, Encom, has issued strong denials about his whereabouts. However, hackers from archaic Usenet users to modern day Internet trollers believe Flynn is alive and fighting the corporate system. But Flynn'll need a lot more help--namely the son he hasn't seen in twenty... >> Read full headline |

Still Ain't 'Fraid of No Ghosts-"Ghostbusters III" On!!
Thursday, Mar 4 | Joseph Savitski
Long in development hell, the third "Ghostbusters" film is finally emerging to head into production. Plans for a third film go back as far as 1998, when Dan Ackyrod penned a film that focused on the original team (with the exception of Peter Venkman, who married Dana and was helping to raise her son), before turning the business over to a younger generation of Ghostbusters. They would be transported to a hellish alternate version of Manhattan called Manhellion, and confront Lucifer himself (with the help of Venkman, who returns in a cameo appearance). That script, as well as a proposed "Ghostbusters IV" faded to obscurity around 2000. But the success of the franchise on dvd/blu-ray release, as well as the very popular video game and graphic novel, has brought the boys back from obscurity.
A new script by the scribes behind "The Office" is in the finishing stages, with veteran director Ivan Reitman returning to helm... >> Read full headline |

Who's Directing "Paranormal Activity 2"? Maybe Brian DePalma?
Thursday, Feb 25 | Joseph Savitski
Right now, the sequel to "Paranormal Activity" is setting sail without a captain. Kevin Geurtert was originally slated to be in the director's seat; that was before Lionsgate invoked a contractual obligation, and legally compelled him to helm "Saw VII" instead. Oren Peli, the director of the first film, was rumored to be being wooed back by Paramount. Today, the Los Angeles Times reported things have taken an even more surprising turn.
Brian DePalma, the director behind "Scarface", "Mission:Impossible", "The Untouchables", and "Dressed to Kill" is being considered to direct the horror sequel. It that sounds incredible, consider that Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted "DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons", was close to signing up as director.
DePalma's a frontrunner, but not a certainty yet. Brad Andersen, director of "Session 9" and "The Machinist" are also in the mix, ditto for Greg McLean-the helmer of "Rogue" and "Wolf Lake". Another unmentioned... >> Read full headline |

Disney's Latest "Pirates" Setting Sail...
Monday, Feb 22 | Joseph Savitski
The fourth "Pirates of the Caribean" film hit rocky seas when it first left dock. Director Gore Verbinski, who helmed the first three films, passed on the project to shepherd a film version of the video game hit "Bio-Shock". Then Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley announced they were giving the fourth film the black spot, deciding on pursuing other projects. Then news came akin to walking the plank in shark infested waters--Johnny Depp was said to be unsure about returning as Captain Jack Sparrow. Without the iconic lead in the film, the movie was sunk before it pulled out of the harbor.
Now it appears things are far from dire on "Pirates of the Caribean: On Stranger Tides". Johnny Depp is fully aboard as Capt. Jack Sparrow, and he'll be joined by two new castmates. Ian McShane is signing on as the villain of the tale, Bluebeard. Geoffery Rush is expected to return as Capt. Barbossa; newbie... >> Read full headline |

The Criterion and Eclipse releases for May are both interesting and exciting. We are most intrigued by the Eclipse Series 21: Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties, Japanese director Nagisa Oshima is one of our favorite New Wavers. May brings with it the first Blu-ray collection of classic avant-garde cinema stateside, a box set of short films by Stan Brakhage. Holy Re-issues Batman! Walkabout and Fritz Lang’s M on Blu-ray! Criterion rounds out May with John Ford’s Stagecoach on DVD & Blu-ray.
Eclipse Series 21: Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties
Often called the Godard of the East, Japanese director Nagisa Oshima was one of the most provocative film artists of the twentieth century, and his works challenged and shocked the cinematic world for decades. Following his rise to prominence at Shochiku, Oshima struck out to form his own production company, Sozosha, in 1961. That move ushered in the prolific period of his career that gave... >> Read full headline |

"Saw" Ends?, "Dawn" Broken?, "Jaws" Reboots?-New "Dune"?--Movie News Roundup
Thursday, Feb 11 | Joseph Savitski
According to one of the writers of “Saw VII”, the series will take its’ final bow this Halloween. Patrick Melton was a guest on Demon Radio FM, where he revealed the franchise was ending at lucky number seven. The “Saw” series was originally slated to extend to at least eight films; plans changed when “Saw VI” was battered at the box office by “Paranormal Activity” and barely took home $30 million at the American box office. “Saw VII: Endgame” will be released in 3D on October 22, 2010.
According to Deadline.com, Summit Entertainment is considering splitting the final “Twilight” novel into two separate films. While nothing has officially been announced, it would be a sound financial move to stretch out “Breaking Dawn”, especially in view of the... >> Read full headline |

Tennant's Not Your Lawyer, But Maybe a Doctor Again?
Saturday, Feb 6 | Joseph Savitski
In his five year tenure as the 10th Doctor, David Tennant defeated the Daleks, Cyberman, The Master, werewolves, witches, and all manner of aliens bent on mayhem. But he's met his match with executives for NBC, who passed on picking up his pilot, "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer".
The show's clever premise involves a defense lawyer who begins to suffer debilitating panic attacks in the courtroom. Unable to defend his clients himself, he coaches them on how to represent themselves in from of a jury. The comedy/drama was slated for a possible March air date, in one of the 10pm time slots previously occupied by Jay Leno. NBC then pushed it to a possible Fall debut, but that now appears in serious doubt. It's being reported on numerous news sites that the sets are being taken down, not exactly a promising sign.
Tennant had hoped to follow the path blazed by Hugh Laurie and Tim Roth, British performers who... >> Read full headline |

Monday, Dec 14 | Trevor Stottlemyer
Hello Everyone,
This year has been a blessing for my family and I. My daughter Ingrid Nora Stotttlemyer was born at 8:26pm on 12/09/2009. She was quite early, but both my wife and Ingrid are doing well and getting better each day. Many of you are parents and know the feeling of seeing and holding a son or daughter, but I never imagined the pride and love that a human could feel for a child. I also want to recognize the love and support from the Global Cafe staff, WSYC FM, fans, our families and friends.
