Update on HELLRAISER: REVELATION.
Tuesday, Aug 31 | Joseph Savitski
Many were surprised when news broke last week that Dimensions Films was apparently abandoning the HELLRAISER remake, in favor of yet another direct-to-video sequel. With the film now heading into production, more details about the 8th sequel are slipping out- as well as news that the death of the remake were a bit premature.
The new film is indeed called HELLRAISER: REVELATIONS; the script is by special effects wizard Gary Tunnicliffe and directed by Victor Garcia. Starring in the new horror tale is Peta Wilson, although as reported earlier, Doug Bradley has declined the chance to reprise the role of Pinhead. The story centers around two friends who unleash the Cenobites-however one of them changes his mind and hopes to swap one of his friend's family members in exchange for himself. Expect the chance to see male and female Cenobites, and the introduction of a pseudo-Pinhead. Shooting begins in Louisiana on September 3rd, and is scheduled to... >> Read full headline |

The Devil You Say!?! LAST EXORCISM Opens at #1.
Tuesday, Aug 31 | Joseph Savitski
Cinema verite got a big shot in the arm this weekend, when the micro-budget THE LAST EXORCISM squeaked into the top spot at the box office this weekend. Taking in an estimated $21.3 million, it's a major victory for Lionsgate-especially since the horror film only had a budget of around $2 million. TAKERS finished at #2 with $21 million on fewer screens, but the Screen Gems release had a significantly higher budget of $20 million. THE EXPENDABLES dropped to $9.5 million in its' third week, keeping the old school action entry alive with a cumulative gross of $82 million.
The AVATAR re-release disappointed, the special edition failed to crack the Top 10 and finished at a lowly 12th place. Although the new version contained nine minutes of new footage, it wasn't enough to bring moviegoers back to Pandora. Most likely, the combination of higher 3D ticket prices for a film many own on DVD... >> Read full headline |

Is There A Time Lord In The Shire?
Tuesday, Aug 31 | Joseph Savitski
It seems the upcoming production of THE HOBBIT can't shake the DOCTOR WHO connection. Earlier this year, David Tennant was rumored to be up for a lead role, now Slyvester McCoy has revealed to the Argyllshire Standard that he's up for a big role as a wizard in the film. McCoy declined to name the exact character, although TheOneRing.net believes it is to be Radagast the Brown.
McCoy is best known for playing The Doctor in his 7th incarnation, from 1987 until the show's cancellation in 1989. He did return to reprise the role in Fox's 1996 television film, where he handed over the TARDIS keys to Paul McGann.

Matt Smith Extends Office Hours On DOCTOR WHO!
Sunday, Aug 29 | Joseph Savitski
Earlier it was reported that Matt Smith might be leaving DOCTOR WHO after next season, ditching the 11th Doctor and sprinting for Hollywood. It seems that couldn't be farther from the truth.
Several British publications have head from insider sources in the BBC that, on no uncertain terms, is Smith heading anywhere without the TARDIS and a trusty companion. He's expected to stay on the show past 2013, since producers don't want fans having to get used to another incarnation too soon. DOCTOR WHO and Smith will return for a Christmas special (starring HARRY POTTER'S Michael Gambon), then have a new season begin in early 2011. One of the highlights of the coming season is a script by critically acclaimed author Neil Gaiman.

David Slade To Direct WOLVERINE 2?
Monday, Aug 23 | Joseph Savitski
There's been a sudden movement on the second WOLVERINE film as of late: first Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) was scripting, and then the revelation that Hugh Jackman had dropped out of a comedy to get serious about bulking up for the role. Now it seems the film might get a director with major league talent; David Slade (HARD CANDY, TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE) is in talks to hop into the director's chair.
WOLVERINE 2 is set for release in 2012, and set to go into production early 2011. It'll cover Wolverine's time in Japan as a gajin samurai. With Slade at the helm, expect more of the harder edge the Wolverine graphic novels have. Despite Jackman's desire to have Wolverine included in THE AVENGER'S film project, it looks as though it will sail minus the clawed one. As a result, he's putting all of his efforts into the WOLVERINE sequel. Expect a more family friendly PG-13 rating again,... >> Read full headline |

Was There A Casting Call For SUPER 8 This Weekend?
Monday, Aug 23 | Joseph Savitski
Looks like we might be hearing about an actual cast for J. J. Abrams' massively secret project entitled SUPER 8. A casting call on the Paramount lot was held, searching for 13 - 14 year olds with "a Midwestern feel" to them. This matches what's known about the veiled film, as gleaned from the trailer and internet spies.
The plot postulates that an section of Area 51 was closed off during the 70's, and shipped to the Midwestern United States. Being transported by train, there's a derailment and something escapes. Later, a group of teens making a movie on the antiquated Super 8 format spot an extraterrestrial being in the frames of their movie.
The movie will be shot this fall, and is set for release during the crowded 2011 summer slate. Executive producer is Steven Spielberg under his Amblin production banner, Bad Robot and ILM will also be involved in the production. Abrams... >> Read full headline |

Hugh Jackman Drops AVON MAN To Be An X-Man!
Wednesday, Aug 18 | Joseph Savitski
Fan boys breathed a double sigh of relief when it was announced Hugh Jackman would be dropping out of the lead in AVON MAN--the better to get massively cut for WOLVERINE 2. Jackman was expected to test his comedic chops playing a laid off auto worker, who is forced to sell Avon cosmetics to pay the bills. Sucking up the emasculating situation, he turns on the charm and uses his good looks to become the top seller. He then tries to save the economically depressed town by enlisting his unemployed buddies to hawk cosmetics, in order to win a regional competition. Jackman isn't totally leaving AVON MAN, he'll still stay on as producer.
Hugh won't be taking vacation--far from it. He'll be preparing for a sequel to 2009's WOLVERINE, which means grueling workouts and a protein rich diet to add pounds of muscle to his usually slim frame. The sequel is being scripted by Christopher McQuarrie, and will be... >> Read full headline |

Magnolia Discovers MONSTERS Are Real!
Wednesday, Aug 18 | Joseph Savitski
Things have been pretty quiet on the kaiju front as of late; aside from a trickle of info on the GODZILLA reboot there's been nothing. This September, Magnolia plans to change that with the release of the high concept and low budget MONSTERS.
The premise is an intriguing one. Six years ago, NASA discovered the possibility of life existing within our solar system; an unmanned probe was launched to collect live samples. The film concerns an American journalist, who agrees to escort a tourist through the perilous quarantined zoned.

TERMINATOR Felled--By A Cease & Desist Letter??
Wednesday, Aug 18 | Joseph Savitski
It appears that not everyone is pleased with Hannover House's plan to develop a $70 million animated film based on the TERMINATOR franchise--specifically the company that owns the rights to the characters. Pacificor LLC, who purchased the rights this March in California Bankruptcy Court, hit Hannover with a cease and desist letter this morning. According to Pacificor, they had no knowledge of TERMINATOR 3000 and never gave any permission for work to begin on January 2011. The company would rather keep the series in the direction it has been going, as a live action feature extending for at least two or more films.
Hannover House CEO Eric Parkinson has countered this news by announcing he has financial backing currently in place and can deliver the massive rights payment that could be as expensive as $30 million. A meeting between the two parties is scheduled for next week, at which time this matter is expected... >> Read full headline |

New TERMINATOR Film--From An Unlikely Source?
Wednesday, Aug 18 | Joseph Savitski
After TERMINATOR: SALVATION, it was assumed somebody would make another film in the franchise. Director McG had plans for 2 more films, but those promptly went up in the air when the rights went to auction. Now it seems there's a new player in the TERMINATOR sweepstakes.
Now an Arkansas based production company called Hannover House has announced it is moving forward with a fifth TERMINATOR film, being co-produced with Red Bear Entertainment. Called TERMINATOR 3000, the project will be a $70 million 3D animated feature said to feature the characters and situations begun in the first film. The press release keeps things under close wraps, with no stars, director, writer, or plot listed. However, it does make a point of saying the violence will be toned down for a PG-13 rating. No word on production start or release date either.

The Scoop on Nolan's 3rd BATMAN Film!
Wednesday, Aug 18 | Joseph Savitski
Ever since the closing credits began on THE DARK KNIGHT, fans have their rabid speculation and rampant rumors as to what will happen next. Names like Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, David Tennant, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert Pattison have all been linked to roles in the next film.
Here's what's truly known for sure:
The official title of the film is currently UNTITLED 2012 BATMAN SEQUEL, and it will begin filming next April for release in July 20, 2012. Unlike the previous two films, which were primarily lensed in Chicago, the third film will shoot in New Orleans to take advantage of the city's generous tax incentives. The new villain is expected to be The Riddler, portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Rumors of the Catwoman making an appearance are highly unlikely, as Nolan prefers to use only one villain per film.

Bekmambetov Leaves TWILIGHT WATCH At The Altar For ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER.
Monday, Aug 9 | Joseph Savitski
According to an interview with Empire, the next project from Timur Bekmambetov will be a film adaptation of ABRAHAM LINCOLN, VAMPIRE HUNTER; expect Tim Burton to produce the film with the film shooting in America this winter. He's also developing WANTED 2, but that will have to wait until star James McAvoy finishes his obligations on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. As for MOBY DICK and 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, both are still in the scripting stages and Timur still has intentions to direct them.
For NIGHTWATCH fans, the news isn't so promising. The third film, TWILIGHTWATCH, was suppose to have been Bekmambetov's next project. Produced through FOX SEARCHLIGHT, it would have taken the main characters to America, where they would team up with the Los Angeles branch of the Night Watch. But after the success of WANTED, the project has increasingly been pushed to the background--much to the dismay of fans. Timur now... >> Read full headline |

But now it seems the SAW series will join the large number of horror franchises whose "final" films were anything but.
Dark Horizons has reported that SAW VII star Betsy Russell let it slip that the writers have cooked up a scenario for SAW 8. She described the story as "incredible", and is sure an 8th film will happen. SAW VII is still set to open October 22nd, opposite PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2.

The big news reported around the 'net concerns the long gestating ALIEN prequel, and the hot writer assigned to craft the script. LOST's Damon Lindelof is being brought aboard to rewrite John Spaihts' screenplay, getting it ready for Ridley Scott to direct. Lindelof is no stranger to working on film, he did unaccredited rewrites on the STAR TREK reboot and co-wrote the upcoming COWBOYS & ALIENS. He'll also be working on the STAR TREK sequel due out in 2012. He wrote the Marvel Comic miniseries ULTIMATE HULK VS. WOLVERINE, notable for having a year gap in between issues. The ALIEN prequel will be filmed in 3D, and is expected to elaborate on the mysterious "space jockey" alien found by the crew of the Nostromo--despite the fact that the origins of the space jockey and it's race were revealed in comic books published by Dark Horse.

He's Tanned, Rested, & Ready--Godzilla's Back!!!
Wednesday, Aug 4 | Joseph Savitski
The San Diego Comicon always produces a massive amount of fanboy hype to a spectacular degree. So it's understandable that a significant nugget of news got lost amid panels for high profile projects like GREEN LANTERN, AVENGERS, and TRON LEGACY. A precious nugget revealing Godzilla was truly back, and showing off his retro look.
Visitors to the Legendary Pictures booth got the chance to acquire t-shirts showing an advance look at Godzilla in his reboot look scheduled for 2012. The new design is pretty faithful to Toho's ideas, and all resemblances to the 1998 Godzilla have been scrapped. The new look Godzilla does appear to be a bit scarier, slightly influenced by the creature suit seen in GODZILLA 2000.
It was confirmed by those working at the booth that this was the new Godzilla design, and not fan art or a proposed design. It was also confirmed that production was moving forward, with further... >> Read full headline |

ROBOCOP & GHOSTBUSTER III Dead!
Wednesday, Aug 4 | Joseph Savitski
It looks like the ROBOCOP reboot has been terminated, according to Moviehole and The Financial Times. Darren Aronofsky has walked away from the project after working on Robocop's resurrection for the past few years. That, combined with the disastrous financial state of MGM Studios likely means the project is dead in the water. The film was to have been released in 2012, from a script by David Self and Aronofsky--however those ambitions have now been deleted.
In a recent interview, Bill Murray has announced that the rumors regarding a new GHOSTBUSTERS film are just that. According to him the project isn't moving forward now or anytime in the future. This puts his opinion in conflict with Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis, who had said publically they were expecting to shoot this autumn or early winter for a 2012 release. Nick Cave on Board for THE CROW Reboot!
Tuesday, Jul 27 | Joseph Savitski
AICN is reporting today that musical Renaissance man Nick Cave is rewriting Steven Norrington's script for the upcoming rebooting of THE CROW. Aside from leading the rock band The Bad Seeds, Cave has also written the script for THE PROPOSITION and composed music for THE ROAD and THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES. Nick Cave is being brought in to re-interpret James O'Barr's original source material, a great move since Cave's imagination may just be what's needed to take an idea that's become formulaic and take it in a new direction. It also signifies Norrington and producer Edward R. Pressman are serious about reviving the franchise, and are anxious to avoid another ridiculous outing like THE CROW: WICKED PRAYER. No cast has been officially announced, but the reboot is expected sometime in 2012.
